August 2005 to date

Golder Associates                        Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Senior Engineer

Responsible for geotechnical investigations and numerical modelling (limit equilibrium, finite element, finite difference & discrete element modelling) for a wide range of projects, including the design of cut-and-cover tunnel, driven tunnel, retaining walls,  slopes, building foundations, and deep basements

January 2004 to July 2005

ATKINS                                                            Epsom, UK

Senior Engineer

Responsible for assessment analysis and numerical modelling (limit equilibrium, finite element, finite difference & discrete element modelling) for a wide range of projects, including the design and assessment of cut-and-cover tunnel, driven tunnel, mining and ground treatment (ground improvement).

June 2000 to January 2004

Ecole Centrale de Lyon                                   Lyon, France

PhD Student

Research into time-dependent and strain softening behaviours of the ground. A new constitutive model, which takes into account those behaviours until rupture of the ground, has been introduced. This model has been implemented into finite difference software, Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC). A new numerical analysis procedure for predicting deformations induced by tunnelling has been established as well. To describe this procedure and the capability of the model, a comparison between numerical calculations (2D and 3D) and monitoring the progressive closure of tunnel conducted in the TGV tunnel of Tartaiguille, has been performed by using FLAC.

Cross Passage Tunnel Ground Freezing                                          Hong Kong

Construction of three cross passages beneath the Long Valley Wetland which involved excavation in water-bearing completely decomposed volcanic tuff (CDV). Ground freezing was identified as a preferred form of ground treatment due to the ground conditions and the environmental constraints posed by the ecologically sensitive wetland. Developed finite difference (FLAC) soil-structure interaction models for modelling the construction sequence and a new constitutive model for taking into account the time dependent and temperature dependent behaviours of the ground.

Old Drainage Tunnels                                                                 Saudi Arabia

Stabilisation of the old drainage tunnels in high weathered rocks. Undertaken the assessment of drainage driven tunnels using kinematic analyses (DIPS and UNWEDGE 3D) and developed finite difference (FLAC) and distinct element (UDEC) soil structure interaction models. Proposed the treatments to stabilise the tunnels.

Tunnels and Portal Structures, East-West Motorway                             Algeria

Construction of tunnels and portal structures in highly to slightly weathered rocks for the East-West Motorway. Method of excavation used is NATM with rock bolts and shotcrete as temporary supports and cast in-situ concrete as permanent lining. Cement grouted glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) has been used to stabilise the working face. Developed finite difference (FLAC) soil-structure interaction models for designing and detailing of the cut-and-cover and driven tunnels and temporary excavations support. Coordinated the design process with  other design engineers.

Rock Salt Mines                                                                        Northwich, UK
